A Matter of Light

The Matter of Light

With co-juror Katherine Ware

What is a photograph? The origins of the word photography give us the broad idea of writing with light, while dictionary definitions tend to describe photography as we have known it, rather than offering some essential quality against which to measure. However we may define a photograph, what is certain is that its close connection with the world we see continues to pay a powerful role in art-making.

For this call we are looking for work that addresses this issue within our A Matter of Light theme. As usual we encourage artists working with photography in unconventional ways to submit—including (but not limited to) assemblage, historic processes, installation, mixed media, hand crafted processes, etc.

I was thrilled and honored to be selected for the exhibition award. The exposure I received from having an image on the cover was phenomenal, and being included in the Five Year Retrospective exhibit at Verve Gallery of Photography exposed my work to a whole new audience. What a ‘class’ publication!

Being chosen to have a feature article on my series, Object Diaspora, and having one of my images in that article on the cover of Diffusion magazine has far exceeded any other promotional marketing I could have done for my own work. Diffusion Magazine has a network more far-reaching to the type of audience my work seeks than I could have possibly gathered just on my own. I am forever grateful to Blue Mitchell and all the readers of the magazine for supporting my work – Diffusion is an amazing resource for artists working in unique approaches to photography!

I met Blue Mitchell from Diffusion at Photolucida (it was my first photography portfolio), I was intimidated and nervous. People kept telling me Blue will love your work. I was so happy to meet with him! His work and efforts have created relationships and opportunities for me and my work ever since that day. Diffusion has reached many viewers who have contacted me, attended my workshops and purchased pieces. Blue has organized two wonderful shows, one at Luz Gallery in Victoria, BC and one at Verve Gallery of Photography in Sante Fe, New Mexico – I feel so fortunate to have been included in both of these group exhibitions. Thank you Blue!

Diffusion magazine really is on the pulse of contemporary image making. The range of work and techniques is stunning. It’s also an amazing resource for artists to get their work seen by a wider audience that appreciates the tactile qualities of unconventional photography methods. Since having my work published in Diffusion Volume IV, there has been a significant increase of interest in my work and my process. I can’t thank Diffusion and founder Blue Mitchell enough for the exposure!
